Spring is here!

And so are some fantastic arty things happening in our region!

Highlighted in this edition are some inspirations from the recent Regional Arts Australia conference in Goolwa, an artist networking get together in Casterton and a history project opportunity. And don’t forget, Regional Arts Victoria’s project, Home Is where the Hall Is is on this month so check out the calendar of events on the project website for a hall event near you. See you around the traps! Perhaps at some of our beautiful community halls.

Kumuwuki / Big Wave Regional Arts Australia conference project highlights!

The conference is over but I’d like to share some great projects I came across for inspiration.
‘Word on the Street‘ by Sandy Elverd and the CAN SA crew was a workshop that saw us going out into the Goolwa streets to have conversations with the public.  In short, have a conversation, take some words from that conversation and stick them in the public space (with permission of course!). The image above is from this workshop – it was so much fun!  What a wondeful, simple project.

‘Southern Encounter’ was a project on an old steam train that travelled along the coast from Victor Harbour to Strathalbyn. With our special conductor and the creative team at ‘Wired Lab‘, we took the journey with small creative encounters along the way. An experience like nothing else.

‘Projector Bike’ by  Carclew Youth Arts - an animation workshop to draw and animate a mythical figure in only one session. Our tutors then rode their ‘projector bike’ around the night time venue projecting our works on the wall. It was simple and gorgeous.

Artists have an opportunity to apply to be a part of a major project for the Centenary of Canberra titled ‘One River’. If you have a link to the Murray Darling Basin or an idea that responds well to this project have a look at the expression of interest here.  You can also find them on Facebook.

The website also maps the Murray Darling Basin and gives an overview of the whole project.

TEA ‘N’ TALK 

Arts and ideas afternoon
With special guests Norm and Elsie miller from Gorae West (project). 

Come and be a part of ‘tea and talk’ and discuss the arts in the Glenelg Shire. Presenting are regional artists Phil Cousins and Heather Richardson talking about projects they have presented in the shire, as well as their experiences with funding.

Hosted by Glenelg Shire Council, this will also be an opportunity for people to feed back to the Council on their ‘Cultural Strategy Five Year Plan’.

Afternoon session chaired by Regional Arts Development Officer, Jo Grant.

Southern Grampians Shire Council is calling for event organisers to submit funding applications prior to 1 November 2012 for minor and community events that are held between 1 January and 31 March 2013.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST
Research of material for Glenelg Shire history book

2013/14 is the 150^th anniversary of several significant local government milestones in the Glenelg Shire. To mark the occasion Council proposes to publish a history book. The book will capture the complete life of the district encompassing its economic and social activities by looking at the intersection of the three former councils and the people they served; Glenelg Shire Council since restructure; and the shire as it is today. Council is seeking expressions of interest from authors, researchers and historians to research and present the content for this book.

Fourth Upwelling Festival in Portland this Saturday

Check out the program for the upcoming Upwelling Festival over in Portland on Saturday (3rd). This year festival organisers have lots of projects including a floating sculpture and a permanent inflatable whale.

Festival is programmed all day – something for everyone.
